Union Station Indianapolis Indiana

In September of 1853, the Indianapolis Union Railway opened the first Union Station in the world in, what is today known as, the Wholesale District. By 1900, the station was forced to become an elevated in order to stop interfering with the regular street traffic.

In 1974, Union Station was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and was converted into an urban mall in 1979. However, in 1979 the Circle Centre Mall opened and the mall soon closed. In 2002, the Crown Plaza Hotel moved in and took up much of the space, even converting some of the old Pullman cars to hotel rooms. Currently, other tenants in Union Station are Band of America, a charter school for 21st Century, the Indiana Museum of African American History, the Japan-America Society of America, the Pacers academy, and the Consulate of Mexico. In addition, several times a week, Amtrak trains run from the station to Washington D.C. and Chicago.
