Young Audiences of Indiana

A child displays the artwork he created after participating in one of the programs offered by Young Artists of IndianaYoung Audiences of Indiana is another organization that is fervently dedicated to teaching youth the value and importance of art. It was established in 1961 as a venue to expose the children of Central Indiana to a wide variety of artists, from local to international. They see arts education as a right, and as a way to empower children and fuel their creativity and intellect.

Through its roster of the highest quality professional artists, Young Audiences of Indiana can offer almost any art program that a teacher can think of to a school. From modern dance performances to paper-making workshops, from story-telling to West-African drumming, Young Audiences of Indiana has it all. Most of the artists in the Young Audiences catalogue are more than just performers; they are trained and experienced in creating an integrative, interpretive atmosphere for youth that will do more than keep them occupied – it will inspire them to learn more.

More than just a school program, Young Audiences of Indiana offers many activities that families canDance performances and workshops are offered by Young Audiences of Indiana participate in as well. In the summer, they have their SAY program, Summer Arts for Youth. The SAY program is a series of day-camps set up at community centers throughout Indianapolis in which children are taught dance, visual arts, music, and theatre. At the end of the session, the children perform for their family and friends. This program has earned grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Another distinctive program that Young Audiences of Indiana provides is Inside Arts, which gives kids in juvenile detention facilities a chance to learn the arts as well. Often ignored by other programs, kids in these facilities often need the direction, focus, and release that the arts bring more than anyone else. Young Audiences of Indiana recognizes that and have provided several central Indiana detention centers with programs that range from small, intensive workshops to facility-wide performances.

Through fundraising and educational efforts, Young Audiences of Indiana has increased not only arts education, but also the awareness of the importance of arts education. They retain speakers to speak at events about arts education and hold classes and workshops, often at no charge, for educators. Organization like Young Audiences of Indiana are part of the reason that central Indiana’s art community is continually growing and reshaping the city around us.

Classroom workshops and demonstrations are integrated and varied.
